On 12 February, WMG organized a workshop under the DECOMPRES project titled

“Breaking Barriers, Powering the Future: Vision and Challenges of Shore-Side Electricity in Ports.”

The event brought together port authorities, energy providers, shipping representatives, technology providers, and international experts to discuss the critical challenges related to implementing Shore-Side Electricity (SSE) systems in Greek ports.

The discussion addressed:

  • European policy and strategic frameworks
  • The challenges faced by Greek Port Authorities in the context of SSE deployment
  • International standards and technological solutions
  • The evolving needs of the shipping industry
  • Business and operational models for Shore-Side Electricity (SSE) integration

Dr. Stefanos Dallas, Head of EU Projects at PROTASIS SA highlighted four key pillars that must be addressed to enable successful SSE implementation in Greece:

1️⃣ Ensuring adequate grid capacity
2️⃣ Resolving spatial and land-use constraints within port areas
3️⃣ Upgrading port infrastructure to support electrification
4️⃣ Streamlining complex licensing procedures

He also emphasized that achieving the Fit for 55 targets by 2030 requires coordinated action and close collaboration among ministries, port authorities, distribution and transmission system operators, and technology providers.

At PROTASIS, we believe that accelerating port electrification is not only a regulatory obligation but a strategic opportunity to enhance sustainability, competitiveness, and innovation in the maritime sector.
